The Poole Family: Lovick Pierce Poole

Before I deviate too far from the Poole family, and begin to share work on other family lines, I thought I'd share what information I have on the children of John F. Poole who were not my direct line.  I am endlessly curious as to what happens to families and so I often go down Rabbit Trails to find out where they ended up.

Wesley, Edmond and Harriet remained nearest their father.  I've no clue really what happened to Elizabeth nor John who both appear to have settled in Bibb County and lived in Macon, Georgia.    But to the best of my ability where possible here I will share what I know of each child.

Lovick Pierce Poole was born December 11, 1848 and died about 1900, most likely in Russellville Alabama but that is not established by anything other then it being where  his third(?) wife lived.

I think it's highly likely that Lovick was named for a well known Methodist minister by the name of Lovick Pierce.  It was a fairly common name among Middle Georgians to have  a son name Lovick Pierce, but I do believe in the case of this young man his father might have been connected personally  to Lovick Pierce since John was also a Methodist preacher circuit rider in Lovick Pierce's district.

Census information for 1850, and 1860 Monroe County are listed on the post for his father John F. Poole.

In 1870, he is listed in Pike County, Georgia census (now Lamar County) in Barnesville district

1870 Pike County, Barnesville District

Lovick P., 23 Clerk dry goods store

Julia E., 19, wife

Moriah McLane16, black female domestic

Julia Elizabeth Peacock was born April 24, 1850  and die Nov., 28, 1885.   I have not been able to firmly establish her parents name nor their residence nor her birthplace.  In one area I listed her birthplace as Monroe County and in another as Macon County, so I obviously need to do more research on her.   I do not know the date she married.  I will continue researching this in the future.

In the 1880 census the Lovick Pool family had moved.

1880 Census, Decatur County, Bainsbridge, Attapulgas district

 Lovick 32, occupation Miller

Julia E., 28

Mattie E., 10

Clara A., 4

Catie A., 1

As nearly as I can tell, these are the children and their birthdates who were born to Lovick and Julia:

Mattie Emma, b. September 30, 1870 in Barnesville, Pike County, Georgia

John Thomas, b. July 31, 1873 in Culloden, Monroe County

Clara Alice b. October 5, 1876 in Monroe County

Katie (Catie) Ariska, b. 1879  in Taylor County, Georgia

Malcom Nicholson  b. August 23, 1881, Decatur County,  Georgia

Charnie P. (Peacock?) b. 1884 Decatur County, Georgia

According to Decatur County, Georgia marriage records,  LP Pool was married to Mrs. P. C. White on May 23.   I have no further record of her.  I only assume that this was Lovick as it seems likely with children on hand marriage was a necessity.  If she had children or they had children together I do not know.  Again that 1890 gap is a sore loss to us who do family research!  I do have a photocopy of this certificate.

In the 1890's we find Lovick has moved once more.

A marriage license was issued for him in Muscogee County, Georgia:

LP Poole to Mrs. Sallie Thompson on August 21, 1892.  I have a photocopy of this certificate.

1900 Alabama Precinct 1, Girard City, Ward 1-3 census in Russell County, Alabama

LP Pool, 53, miller   literate

Sallie, 41, illiterate mother of 3

Young, Alex Pool, 18 years (in fact, Alex was Sallie's child and not LP Pool's.  Alex's last name was Thompson.  This based upon the marriage date of Sallie and Lovick)

Also listed is Joseph T. Pool, age 10  whose occupation is listed as 'dinner toter'.   This child undoubtedly was also Sallie's and not Lovick's, again based upon probable year of birth and Sallie's marriage date.

In the 1910 Alabama census, there's no Lovick Pool listed.  Sallie is listed in the household of Young A. Thompson (note that last name) and her marital status is 'widow'.

To the best of my knowledge those listed below are the descendants of Lovick Pierce Pool and Julia Elizabeth Peacock Pool.

Mattie Emma Pool born September 30, 1870 in Barnesville, Pike (now Lamar) County.  I have no further information for Mattie Emma.

Clara Alice Pool was born October 5, 1876 and died October 16, 1923 in Phenix City, Alabama.   She married (1) Arthur Tillery b. September 1872 and  (2)James W. Pickren who was born November 1, 1871 and died in Phenix City, Lee County, Alabama on July 25, 1925.    I do not have any information about what marriage dates are, any children born to Clara.

John Thomas Pool, b. July 31, 1873 in Culloden, Monroe County.  I believe he died prior to 1880, but that is possibly a mistake on my part.  He was not listed on the same census but as the rest of his family but that is sometimes not an indication of death.

Catie Ariska Pool b. May 31, 1879 in Taylor County, Georgia.

Malcolm Nicholson Poole, Sr. b. August 23, 1881 in Decatur County, Georgia.  He died March 12, 1952 in Taylor County and is buried in Potterville, Georgia at Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church cemetery.  For the longest time I was unaware of Malcolm's existence or his relation to Lovick.  That all came to light in research and I'm happy to place him in his rightful family.  I have more information about him because he was a Taylor County resident for many years.

Malcolm married Susan (Susie) Bethenia Kimble.  I don't have their marriage date or place.  Susie was born May 26, 1883 and died December 4, 1974.  She too is buried at Mt. Olive Freewill Cemetery in Potterville, Georgia.  Susie's obituary is listed in the Citizen & Georgia paper from Montezuma, Georgia.
